Two doctoral candidate positions

In the Doctoral Programme in Wildlife Biology Research (LUOVA) for a 1–4 year period starting from 1.1.2016. The duration of the employment contract depends on the phase of the appointee´s thesis.

The Doctoral Programme in Wildlife Biology Research (LUOVA) trains students in the fields of ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation, and management of natural populations and communities, as well as in taxonomy and systematics, and computational biology. LUOVA covers both basic and applied research in these fields. The doctoral programme is run by the Department of Biosciences at the University of Helsinki in collaboration with the Departments of Environmental Sciences, Forest Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Geosciences and Geography, Finnish Museum of Natural History, Lammi Biological Station and Tvärminne Zoological Station, as well as Finnish Environment Institute, Natural Resources Institute Finland and Metsähallitus.

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and to complete his or her postgraduate studies. The duties can include also teaching and other tasks. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary is EUR 2051–3006 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.

Applicants to these positions do not have to have a second-cycle degree (e.g. master’s degree or equivalent) at the time of applying but he or she must graduate with a second-cycle degree early enough so that he or she can be granted with the right for postgraduate studies at the University of Helsinki by December 31st, 2015. The appointees must hold the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment.
