Combined Workshop/PhD course in genomics based breeding in forest trees
Copenhagen 16-19 September 2013

Genomics-based breeding of livestock, vegetables and other agricultural speciesis already an on-going and implemented discipline. Marker based breeding has particularly interesting possibilitiesfor forest trees – especially because of the long timelines necessary to obtain phenotypic evaluation for the majority of traits in trees and the substantial costs associated with making these evaluations. At the same time, next generation sequencing has revolutionized the science of genetics in recent years – making the simultaneous generation and genotyping of tens of thousands of DNA markers a realistic opportunity, even in non-model species like trees. The combined workshop/PhD course is arranged by ADAPCAR (http://www.nordicforestresearch.org/adapcar/).

The target groups are active forest tree breeders as well as PhD students within the area of forest genetics and related areas. The intention is that all the participants get state-of-the-art knowledge about genomics-based breeding during the first day, which is the workshop for both target groups. The following days will be for the participants in the PhD course only and will be a mix of hands-on exercises with computer and short introductions/presentations in relation to the topics included in the teaching.

Program and content
Day one (September 16) will be presentations of how to use genomic data in breeding – both in trees, other plants and animals. Day 2-4 (September 17-20 – only participants in the PhD course) will be hands-on computer exercises mixed with presentations/introductions.

Course material
Articles and lecture notes. All course material will be available through a restricted web site.

Practical information
No limit on number of participants to the first day. Maximum number of participants in the PhD course (day 2-4) is twenty. PhD students have preference, remaining “seats” are open to non-PhD students. The workshop/course will take place at University of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Campus (within Copenhagen).

Travel, lodging, and accommodation are to be organised and paid by the participants themselves; suggestions for hostels and hotels will be posted on the web.

There will be no course fee.

PhD course credit
3 ECTS points. Requirement for obtaining credit: approval of a written assignment.
