The summer school will bring together promising young scientists with renowned experts in the field of tree physiology and woody bioenergy production, with the scope to interact and discuss the premises for building an enjoyable and successful career in environmental sciences.

The theme of the summer school will approach the general subject of facing the increasing needs of a low-carbon, bio-based society to mobilize increasing wood and environmental resources, by utilizing the genetic and ecological potentials of fast growing tree species like poplar. The PRO-BIOPA summer school will therefore tackle the increasing environmental concern of climate change impacts on woody biomass production, especially on scarce water and nutrient resources, the competition for land, but also will identify the genetical and technological potential offered by these tree species for mitigating and solving some of our enormous envionmental problems.
– The Topics – Renowned experts will discuss latest developments in poplar genetics, short rotation coppice (SRC) production systems, analysis of C and N budgets and trace gas (CO2, CH4, N2O; volatile organic compounds VOC) balances, as well as socio-economic issues like competition and allocation of suitable land resources, life cycle assessment and energy balance of the entire woody biomass production chain.
